Summer Gas Upgrade Works Announced for Magherafelt

Posted: 25 Jun, 2025
Evolve has confirmed an updated schedule for key gas infrastructure works in Magherafelt town centre this summer, with the timing aligned to school holidays in an effort to minimise disruption for residents, businesses and commuters.
The project forms part of Evolve’s ongoing strategy to expand the local gas network amid growing demand, providing greater access to cleaner, more efficient energy across the town and wider Mid Ulster region.
From Monday 30th June, there will be a lane closure on Castledawson Road, with two-way traffic lights in operation for approximately two weeks. In early July, a short-term one-way closure will be introduced on Union Road for inbound traffic, with a signed diversion in place via Garden Street, Rainey Street and Broad Street.
Later in the month, Queen Street will undergo an off-peak one-way closure from Monday 28 July for approximately one week, rerouting traffic via the Magherafelt bypass. Additionally, from Wednesday 30th July, Rainey Street will be subject to a lane closure with temporary traffic lights in place for around three weeks.
Mark Davidson, Head of Engineering at Evolve, said: “We appreciate the community’s continued patience as these vital works are carried out. By scheduling the works during school holidays, we aim to minimise the impact on day-to-day life. These upgrades are another important step in delivering the benefits of modern gas infrastructure to more homes and businesses in Magherafelt.”

Evolve (formerly SGN Natural Gas) is the gas distribution network operator for the west of Northern Ireland, covering eight key towns: Cookstown, Dungannon, Enniskillen, Derrylin, Magherafelt, Coalisland, Omagh, and Strabane.
The first-ever direct-to-grid injection of biomethane, an entirely green energy source, took place within the Evolve network in 2023, in what was a landmark moment for the decarbonisation of energy. The integration of renewable and sustainable energy sources into existing gas grids is identified as a crucial step by government. Connecting to the gas network to take advantage of the plan to fully decarbonise the gas being used is a recommendation in the Northern Ireland Executive’s Path to Net Zero Energy Strategy.
